Agungi to Victoria Island: How to Time the Lekki Commute

The shape of the morning: Agungi, Ikate and the Lekki toll gate

If you are staying around Agungi, Ikate or the second Lekki toll gate, the commute to Victoria Island runs through two predictable pinch points: the Lekki Toll Gate plaza and the Falomo Bridge approach into Ikoyi. Leaving Agungi before 6:15am usually gets you over Falomo in 30 to 45 minutes. Between 6:30am and 9:00am the same run can take 90 minutes or more, and the worst stretch is rarely the expressway itself — it is the queue where Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue meets the Falomo roundabout.

From the northern end of Lekki Phase 1 — around Admiralty Way, Fola Osibo and Bisola Durosinmi-Etti — you are ten to fifteen minutes closer to Falomo than Agungi, which matters more than the extra room rate. Hotels along Admiralty Way and Freedom Way are the sensible base if Victoria Island meetings dominate your trip; the difference is a genuine 20 minutes on a bad morning, not a marketing claim.

Afternoons, evenings and the return leg

Coming back is the harder half. From about 4:30pm, the Falomo Bridge and the Ikoyi link road fill steadily, and the Lekki Toll Gate queue can add 25 to 40 minutes on its own. If you are staying in Lekki Phase 1, aim to cross back before 4:00pm or after 8:00pm. The single best window is roughly 1:30pm to 3:30pm, when the expressway is almost free-flowing and the run from Victoria Island to Agungi takes 35 to 50 minutes.

Friday afternoons deserve their own warning: the combination of end-of-week traffic and evening social bookings around Admiralty Way makes 5:00pm to 8:00pm the slowest block of the week. Saturday morning is clear; Sunday evening brings a second surge as weekend visitors head back toward the island. If your flight or event is fixed, book a hotel on the Lekki Phase 1 side rather than Agungi, and treat the difference as insurance rather than luxury.

Choosing where to sleep: Agungi, Lekki Phase 1 or Ikate

Agungi suits longer stays and travellers with a car or a driver: mid-range hotels here sit in a quieter residential grid, with restaurants along the Lekki-Epe Expressway service lane and easy access to the Lekki Conservation Centre on the Lekki-Epe Expressway toward Ajah. Lekki Phase 1 is the better pick for a two or three-night business trip — walkable to cafes and shops on Admiralty Way, close to the toll gate, and shorter on every Victoria Island run. Ikate sits between the two and works well if your days split between Victoria Island and the Lekki Phase 1 commercial strip.

My recommendation for a first Lekki trip centred on Victoria Island: book in Lekki Phase 1, ideally within a short walk of Admiralty Way. For a family or a longer stay of a week or more, Agungi gives more space and quieter nights for the same band of money. Skip hotels marketed as 'Lekki' that actually sit past the Ajah bridge or in Sangotedo — the extra 20 to 30 minutes each way sounds small and is not.

Timing your trip and getting around without a car

November to February brings the driest weather and the most reliable drive times; the rains from June to September slow everything, and a single heavy downpour on the Lekki-Epe Expressway can double a morning run. Public holidays around December and Easter are best avoided for anything time-sensitive. Ride-hailing apps work well in Lekki and Victoria Island, but surge pricing during the 7:00am to 9:00am and 5:00pm to 8:00pm peaks is common, so build slack into your day rather than relying on a fast pickup.

For a two-centre trip, split the stay: Lekki Phase 1 for the Victoria Island working days, then Agungi or the quieter Ikate side for the weekend, when the Lekki Conservation Centre, the beaches off the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the restaurants along Admiralty Way are the draw. Book Lekki accommodation early for December, when demand from returning visitors and event weekends tightens availability across the corridor.
