Victoria Island (VI) is the business district — banks, embassies, oil-company HQs, and the biggest concentration of five-star hotels in Nigeria. It's on the small island west of Lekki, connected to Lekki Phase 1 by the toll bridge ($1). For a beach-clubs-and-Lagos-energy trip, VI is the essential twin to Phase 1: Eko Hotel's beach frontage, the Kalakuta Republic, Bogobiri House, and a strip of restaurants along Akin Adesola and Adetokunbo Ademola that anchor Lagos's high-end dining.

It suits business travellers, first-timers who want a polished base, and anyone doing a mix of city and beach. Rooms start higher — $110-180 for decent business hotels, $250-500 at the five-stars — but the walkability, safety, and infrastructure are the best in Lagos. Skip VI if you want authentic Lagos street food and a budget stay; the district is expensive and international rather than local. And skip it in favour of Phase 1 if beach-club days are the whole trip.

By 9pm the Akin Adesola strip is at its best: valet lines outside Nok by Alara, tables spilling onto the pavement at RSVP, generators humming under the traffic noise from Ozumba Mbadiwe. Security is visible and reassuring — private guards outside every restaurant, police checkpoints at the main junctions — which is part of why VI reads as the safest place to be out late on the island. Taxis queue outside every venue, so there's no standing on a dark corner waiting for a Bolt. It's polished rather than raw, and that's exactly the trade a VI evening makes.

Compare that to Lekki Phase 1's Admiralty Way, ten minutes east over the bridge, and VI feels corporate by contrast — more suits, fewer flip-flops, wine lists rather than the Star-and-suya crowd. First-timers who want one base for meetings and dinners should book VI outright. Budget travellers, and anyone chasing Phase 1's beach-club scene, should book there instead and treat VI as a taxi ride for one or two dinners, not a base for the whole trip.

Where to stay in Victoria Island

The five-stars (Eko Hotel, Radisson Blu, InterContinental, Federal Palace) cluster along Akin Adesola and the Marina at $280-500. Mid-market business hotels along Adetokunbo Ademola and Adeola Odeku run $110-180. Serviced apartments in the Oniru boundary run $130-220. Avoid the Bar Beach strip near Kuramo Waters at night — that's a specific set of clubs and hostess bars, not a hotel zone. If you want VI-comfort at Lekki-price, cross the bridge and stay Ikate. Rates hold fairly flat outside December, when the five-stars push up 20-30% for Detty December and are worth booking six weeks ahead; the mid-market strip eases back toward $95 a night in the April-June low season. For value against walkability, book the Adetokunbo Ademola cluster over the Marina five-stars unless you need the extra space.
