What to expect at Alpha Beach
Alpha Beach used to be one of Lekki's main public beaches until coastal erosion swallowed most of the beachfront hotels — and that history is the reason you should visit. It is now a wide, wild stretch of sand behind the Igbo Efon area, mostly used by local fishermen bringing in the morning catch, church groups doing sunrise prayers on Saturdays, and joggers from the nearby estates. There are no beach clubs, no huts, no gate fee. Just the Atlantic and a reminder of what this whole coast looked like before development.
Strategy: come at sunrise (around 6:15am) when the fishing boats are landing — you can buy fresh fish directly from the nets for a fraction of market prices. Alternatively, come at sunset for the light without the crowd. Do not swim; the erosion has left underwater drop-offs and a vicious rip. Park at the end of Alpha Beach Road where a small informal fee ($2) gets your car watched by the local youths.
