Eleko Beach
Long empty sand, cheap thatched huts and the closest thing to a village beach within reach of Lagos.
What to expect at Eleko Beach
Eleko is what Elegushi looked like twenty years ago — a wide, quiet stretch of coconut palms and thatched-roof rented huts, run informally by the local community. It sits about 45 minutes east of Lekki Phase 1, past the free trade zone, and it is the go-to escape for people who want beach without the bass. You rent a hut for the day (roughly $5-15 depending on size), buy grilled fish and Star beer from the roaming vendors, and swim or nap. There is no boardwalk, no DJ, no metal detectors.
Strategy: hire a Bolt or self-drive out early to beat the expressway traffic returning to town. Pack cash — nobody here takes cards. The current is stronger than it looks; stick to the roped-off swim area near the main entrance where local lifeguards work weekends. Combine the trip with lunch at La Manga or a stop at the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk on the way back for a full day out of the city.
