Awoyaya to Victoria Island: How Visitors Time the Drive

Awoyaya sits about 35 km from Victoria Island, and the difference between a 45-minute run and a two-hour crawl comes down to when you leave and which road you trust.

Awoyaya to Victoria Island: How Visitors Time the Drive

The route, honestly described

Awoyaya is on the Lekki–Epe expressway corridor, just past the Lagos Business School end of Ajah, which puts you roughly 35 km from Victoria Island by road. The standard line runs west along the Lekki–Epe expressway to the Lekki toll gate, then on through Lekki Phase 1, over the Falomo or Ikoyi link, and onto the island. Google Maps will usually offer a second option via the Lagos Island axis at Ikorodu Road, which is longer in kilometres but occasionally quicker at night. Treat the first as default and the second as a backup, not a habit.

The road has improved markedly since the Lekki Deep Sea Port construction era settled, but it still narrows at Ajah and again at the toll gate, and those two pinch points decide your morning. Awoyaya itself is a residential and school belt, so the local roads fill between 6.30 am and 8 am with drop-offs. If you are staying in Awoyaya and commuting in for meetings, you are choosing space and quiet over proximity, and that trade should be deliberate rather than a surprise on day one.

Departure windows that actually work

Leaving Awoyaya before 6 am puts you on Victoria Island in about 45 to 60 minutes, and you will spend the first 20 of them wondering whether you misread the traffic. Leaving between 7 am and 9.30 am is the worst case: allow two hours and expect the stretch from Ajah to the toll gate to move in surges. Mid-morning, roughly 10 am to 11.30 am, settles into 60 to 75 minutes. The afternoon return matters as much as the morning — from Victoria Island, aim to cross the toll gate before 3.30 pm or after 8 pm, because the 4 pm to 7 pm window is heavy in both directions.

Friday afternoons are the exception that breaks the rule, with the island emptying toward Lekki and Epe from about 2 pm. If you have a Friday evening flight or a dinner booking in Lekki Phase 1, take the earlier slot and do not gamble. Rain changes everything: a serious downpour in June or September can add 40 minutes at the Ajah junction alone, where drainage still struggles.

Where to base yourself, and what it costs you

If most of your trip is on Victoria Island, base yourself on the island or in Ikoyi rather than in Awoyaya. Awoyaya makes sense for a family visit, a long stay near the schools, or a trip that mixes Lekki and Epe — the Lekki Conservation Centre on the Lekki–Epe expressway is a 20-minute run from Awoyaya, and the Nike Art Gallery in Lekki Phase 1 is about 40 minutes outside peak hours. Guests in our own listings tend to pick Awoyaya for two- and three-night stays and Lekki Phase 1 for one-night business trips.

For a hotel in Lekki that balances access to both ends of the corridor, I would book in Lekki Phase 1 itself. It sits on the safe side of the toll gate, has the widest range of mid-range and serviced apartments, and puts you 15 to 25 minutes from Victoria Island outside peak. Awoyaya suits longer stays where parking and a quieter street matter more than a short commute. Skip the temptation to book around Ajah junction for convenience; the traffic there is relentless and the evening noise carries.

Practical numbers for planning

Budget for a ride-hail fare that reflects the distance rather than a flat town rate, and confirm the toll is covered before you set off. Bolt and Uber both operate the corridor, but availability in Awoyaya thins after 10 pm, so arrange a return or keep a local contact. The dry months from November to February give the most predictable drives; the long rains from June to September are when you should build extra slack into every appointment. December is busiest for hotels across Lekki, so book early rather than late.

If you are arriving at Murtala Muhammed airport, the drive to Awoyaya via the Lekki–Epe expressway takes about 60 to 90 minutes depending on the hour, and considerably longer on a Friday evening. That is a reason to land in the morning where you can. Our own booking data this week shows most visitors searching Lekki hotels are looking at short stays, so the practical advice is simple: pick your base by where your days are spent, then time the drive around it.
