Four Days Based in Lekki: A Practical Plan for First-Time Visitors

Pick your base street before you pick your hotel

Lekki is not one place. The corridor runs from the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge tollgate out past Chevron Drive, Ikota and Ajah, and where you sleep decides how much of each day you spend in the car. For a four-day trip, first-time visitors are best served by the northern stretch – Admiralty Way, Fola Osibo and the roads off the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout – because that is where the restaurants, pharmacies and supermarkets cluster and where the Link Bridge puts Victoria Island roughly 20 to 30 minutes away outside peak hours.

Rates along Admiralty Way and Lekki Phase 1 generally sit in the mid to upper bracket for serviced hotels with a pool and backup power, while guesthouses on the Ikota and Ajah side come in lower but add 30 to 50 minutes to any island-side outing in the morning rush. If your four days include two beach days, the maths changes and a base nearer Awoyaya or Eleko begins to make sense. Otherwise, stay north and drive south when you need to.

Days one and two: the city side

Day one is a soft landing. Settle in, walk Admiralty Way for lunch, and use the afternoon for the Lekki Conservation Centre on the Lekki-Epe Expressway – the canopy walkway is the draw and a weekday visit avoids the school-group crowds. Book a hotel with a generator-backed power supply and a water tank; it is the single most useful thing you can check before confirming, more so than gym or breakfast. Keep the evening local: the eating places around Fola Osibo and the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout are busy from about seven.

Day two, cross the Link Bridge to Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Leave by 7.30am or after 10am – the tollgate queue between 8am and 9.30am can add 40 minutes. On the island, the National Museum in Onikan and the Freedom Park site are easy half-day stops, and Ikoyi's Awolowo Road covers lunch and a bookstore in one stretch. Allow 3,000 to 5,000 naira equivalent for tolls and fuel on a bridge round trip, and be back on the Lekki side before 5pm if you want to avoid the return crawl.

Days three and four: the coast

Day three goes south on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. Tarkwa Bay is reached by boat from the Five Cowries terminal on Victoria Island rather than by road, so it pairs better with a day-two island outing; from Lekki Phase 1 the transfer plus crossing is about 90 minutes door to beach. For a road-accessible beach day, Landmark Beach on the waterfront near Oniru is the easiest option and about 25 to 40 minutes from Lekki Phase 1 depending on traffic. Beach operators charge entrance and parking separately, so carry cash.

Day four, if you want a quieter coast, drive the expressway toward Eleko and the Awoyaya stretch – the run is 45 minutes to an hour and a half from Lekki Phase 1, and the road narrows past the Sangotedo junction. Go early, return by mid-afternoon, and skip it entirely on a Sunday, when the outbound and return traffic both peak. If you would rather not drive, a hotel-arranged car with a driver for the day is the sensible booking, and worth asking about before you arrive rather than on the morning.

What I would book, and what to skip

For a four-day first visit, I would book two nights in Lekki Phase 1 on or just off Admiralty Way, then two nights further out only if a beach is the priority. Confirm three things in writing before paying: backup power, a water tank, and whether the quoted rate includes the service charge and VAT. Those three questions separate a smooth stay from a difficult one far more reliably than star ratings do. Ask too about parking, because street parking in Phase 1 is tight on weekday evenings.

Skip the temptation to add Ikeja to a four-day Lekki itinerary. The airport run between Lekki Phase 1 and Ikeja is 90 minutes to two and a half hours depending on the hour, and doing it twice eats a whole day. Skip the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge at 8am unless you have no choice, and skip unlicensed beach touts who approach you at the expressway turn-offs. Best months for the coast are November through February, when the rains ease; July and September are the wettest and beach days are a gamble.

Questions, answered

Do I need a car for four days in Lekki?

A car with a driver is more practical than self-driving for most visitors, given the tolls, parking and traffic. Ride-hailing works well within Lekki Phase 1 and to Victoria Island, but for the Eleko beach run, pre-book a car through your hotel.

Is it better to stay in Lekki Phase 1 or nearer the beach?

Lekki Phase 1 wins for a four-day trip mixing city and coast, with restaurants, pharmacies and the Link Bridge close by. Choose the Awoyaya or Eleko side only if two full beach days are your main reason for travelling.

How much time should I allow for the airport transfer?

From Lekki Phase 1 to Murtala Muhammed airport allow at least 90 minutes outside peak hours and up to two and a half hours between 7am and 10am. Book an early departure the night before rather than on the morning of your flight.
