The Corridor, Briefly
Sangotedo sits at the point where the Lekki–Epe Expressway meets the Lekki-Epe axis heading toward Ajah, roughly 15 to 20 kilometres east of Lekki Phase 1 depending on where you start. Almost every trip between the two runs along that expressway, past the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll approach, through the Admiralty Way and Ikota junctions, then on toward Ajah and the Sangotedo turnoff. There is no meaningful shortcut. Your planning should assume the expressway is the only road that matters, and that its condition at 7am is not its condition at 2pm.
Base yourself where your days will start, not where a map suggests. If most of your meetings are in Lekki Phase 1, Victoria Awo or Ikota, a hotel on Admiralty Way or near the Ikota roundabout saves you an hour of expressway time each day. If Sangotedo itself is the focus, staying there removes the commute entirely and puts you minutes from the Novare Lekki mall area and the corridor toward Awoyaya and Ibeju-Lekki.
Beating the Rush
The corridor has two predictable pinch points. Outbound toward Sangotedo, traffic stacks from about 6.30am to 9.30am around the Ikota and Ajah junctions, where the expressway narrows and local traffic joins. Inbound toward Lekki Phase 1, the reverse happens from roughly 4pm to 8pm. A run that takes 20 minutes at midday can take 70 to 90 minutes in peak. Friday afternoons are the worst of the week, and the last week of December is a category of its own.
The practical answer is to travel before 6.30am or between 10am and 3pm, and to avoid Friday evening entirely. If you must move in peak, build the delay into your schedule rather than fighting it, and carry water. Best months to visit Lekki for road comfort are the dry-season stretches from November to April, outside festive weeks, when the expressway drains faster after rain and the calendar is calmer. July and September bring heavier afternoon downpours and slower going.
What to Book, and What to Skip
For a Lekki-focused trip, I would book a mid-range hotel on or just off Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase 1. Rates cluster in a band well below what you would pay for a comparable Victoria Island property, and you are within a short drive of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge for mainland access. For a Sangotedo-heavy trip, book along the Lekki-Epe Expressway near the Sangotedo junction or toward Awoyaya, where the newer builds offer quieter nights and easy parking at similar or lower rates.
Skip anything marketed as 'Lekki' that actually sits past Ajah without saying so; check the map pin before you pay, because the label covers a wide stretch of corridor. Also skip the temptation to stay on Victoria Island and commute in daily — the toll and the bridge traffic turn a 30-minute hop into a project. And ask your hotel directly about power and water reliability rather than relying on photos.
Getting Around Locally
Within Lekki Phase 1, Admiralty Way carries most of the restaurants, banks and services you will need, and it is walkable in sections but rarely pleasant in the heat. Ride-hailing apps work well here and are the sensible default for short hops; agree on the pickup point at your hotel gate, since some compounds are hard for drivers to find. Keke napep and okada fill the gaps for very short distances, but I would not use them for the expressway run to Sangotedo.
For the Sangotedo leg, a booked car with a driver who knows the corridor is worth the modest premium over a metered app ride. Drivers who run this route daily know which junctions to avoid and when. If you are combining business in Lekki Phase 1 with a visit to Sangotedo in one day, do Sangotedo first thing and return before the afternoon builds. Keep some cash for tolls and small stops.
Questions, answered
How long does the drive from Lekki Phase 1 to Sangotedo take?
Roughly 20 to 30 minutes outside peak hours along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, and 70 to 90 minutes between about 6.30am and 9.30am or 4pm and 8pm. Friday afternoons and late December are significantly slower.
Where should I stay for a trip covering both Lekki and Sangotedo?
If most of your activity is in Lekki Phase 1, book on or near Admiralty Way. If Sangotedo is the priority, book near the Sangotedo junction or toward Awoyaya. Doing both from one base usually costs you more in traffic than it saves.
When is the best time of year to visit Lekki?
November to April, outside the last week of December, offers the most predictable driving. Rainy-season months bring heavier afternoon downpours that slow the expressway, so plan morning movements and leave buffer time.
