The Two Airports, and Why It Matters
Most visitors land at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, on the mainland. From there to Lekki Phase 1 is roughly 30 to 45 kilometres depending on your route, and traffic turns that into anywhere from 45 minutes on a quiet Sunday morning to two and a half hours on a Friday afternoon. The Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge toll is a small extra on the direct route. If you are arriving late at night, factor in that some ride-hailing drivers decline trips that take them far from their base, so a pre-arranged pickup is worth considering.
A smaller number of travellers use the old domestic terminal for connecting flights from Abuja or Port Harcourt. That is not cheaper overall once you add the domestic fare, so for most people the sensible plan is a single international arrival and one ground transfer. Budget your arrival for a weekday mid-morning or a Sunday if you have any flexibility — the difference in journey time is significant, and it is the single easiest way to cut the cost of the trip, because time stuck in traffic is time you are paying a driver for.
Shared Shuttle vs Private Transfer
The cheapest fixed-price option is a shared shuttle or an airport transfer booked through your hotel. Shared shuttles generally run per seat and drop at a handful of Lekki points — typically the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout, Admiralty Way and the Ikate area. They are the best value for solo travellers, but you wait for the vehicle to fill and you may be the last drop-off. Book through your hotel and you get a named driver at arrivals, which removes the most stressful part of a first visit.
A private transfer costs more but becomes competitive for two or more people travelling together, and it is the option I would book for a first arrival with luggage, especially after a long flight. Ask the hotel to confirm the fare in writing before you travel and to include the bridge toll. Ride-hailing apps work at the airport but surge pricing after a delayed landing can surprise you, and pickup points move around, so a confirmed hotel transfer is the calmer choice.
The Local Bus and Keke Routes
If you are travelling light and on a tight budget, the local route is bus or danfo from the airport area to Oshodi or CMS, then a bus along the Lekki–Epe expressway corridor. It is genuinely the cheapest in cash terms, but it involves several changes with luggage, and the last stretch to your street is usually a keke napep. I would only recommend this for confident travellers who have been to Lagos before, arrive in daylight, and speak enough of the local pidgin to ask directions comfortably.
For everyone else, the middle path is a ride-hail to a bus rapid transit stop and BRT for the long leg. BRT is cheap, runs in its own lane on parts of the corridor and beats car traffic at peak times. Combine it with a short keke ride at the Lekki end and you spend a fraction of a private transfer. Just avoid it with large suitcases and avoid it after dark on a first visit.
Where to Base Yourself in Lekki
The cheapest way to reach Lekki is only half the saving — where you stay determines what you spend on every subsequent trip. Lekki Phase 1 is closest to the bridge and the Island, with the densest cluster of hotels and restaurants around Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo. Ikate and Jakande are slightly cheaper and still walkable to shops. Further out, the Ajah and Sangotedo end is better value per night but adds 20 to 40 minutes to any Island trip, so you pay it back in transport.
For a first trip built around beaches, restaurants and the Lekki Conservation Centre, I would book Lekki Phase 1 and accept the higher nightly rate — you will take fewer paid trips. If you are staying a week or more and working remotely, Sangotedo gives you more space for the money. Check that your shortlisted hotel confirms airport pickup, generator backup and the exact street address before you commit, and book directly with the hotel where you can.
Questions, answered
How long does it take from Lagos airport to Lekki?
Allow 45 minutes to an hour on a quiet Sunday morning, and up to two and a half hours on a weekday afternoon. Friday evenings are the worst. Build a two-hour buffer into any onward booking and avoid arriving during the evening rush if you can.
Is it cheaper to take a shared shuttle or a private transfer to Lekki?
A shared shuttle is cheapest for one person, but you wait for it to fill and may be the last drop. A private transfer costs more per vehicle yet works out similar or better for two or more travellers, and it is far easier with luggage.
Should I book a hotel that offers airport pickup?
Yes for a first visit. A hotel-arranged pickup gives you a named driver at arrivals, a confirmed fare and no haggling after a long flight. Ask for the fare in writing, confirm whether the bridge toll is included, and keep the driver's number.
