Why Ikate Works as an Evening Base
Ikate Elegushi sits between Lekki Phase 1 and Victoria Island, which is why it suits a two- or three-night stay better than most of Lekki. From the Ikate roundabout you can reach the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in roughly ten minutes outside peak hours, and the Landmark area on Water Corporation Drive in about fifteen. The trade-off is traffic: from about 4pm the inward lanes along Freedom Way and Admiralty Way back up, so plan any evening move south towards Ajah either before 4pm or after 8pm rather than in between.
Booking in Ikate means you are trading resort quiet for access. Guesthouses and small hotels along the Ikate and Elegushi beach road usually run mid-range for the area, while the bigger names towards Lekki Phase 1 sit a band or two higher. If your evenings are mostly dinners and beach time, stay in Ikate. If your evenings are Ajah errands or family visits, the drive will wear thin by day three, and a base nearer the expressway makes more sense.
The Expressway Route: Fast on Paper, Slow at Peak
The default evening route from Ikate to Ajah is out via the Lekki-Epe Expressway, past the Lekki Phase 1 and Oniru junctions, then south through Igbo Efon, the Lekki Toll Gate area and on to Ajah. Off-peak it is a 25 to 35 minute drive. Between 5pm and 8pm, when office traffic and the evening market runs overlap around Igbo Efon, the same trip can easily double. Rides are metered or negotiated through the usual apps; there is no fixed fare, so check the estimate before you accept.
What I would skip is the temptation to cut through estate roads to beat the queue. Many of those roads are gated after dark or exit onto the expressway further back than you started. If you must travel at peak, leave Ikate before 4:30pm, or hold dinner first and move after 8:30pm when the expressway clears. For a short stay that one timing decision saves more time than any route trick.
The Coastal and Admiralty Way Alternatives
A second option runs along the coast: from Ikate towards Okunda Beach and the Elegushi stretch, then joining the expressway near Jakande or Awoyaya depending on conditions. It is scenic in daylight and noticeably quieter, but unlit stretches and sandier side roads make it a daytime route rather than an evening one. Keep it for a late-afternoon beach stop, not for a night transfer to Ajah.
The third route uses Admiralty Way through Lekki Phase 1, joining Ozumba Mbadiwe towards Victoria Island and looping back south. This is the long way round and rarely faster than the expressway, so treat it as a fallback when the expressway is jammed around Igbo Efon. On the return leg to Ikate after 9pm, the expressway is usually the quickest. If you are weighing where to sleep, hotels just off Admiralty Way put you closest to restaurants; Ikate puts you closer to the beach and the bridge.
Matching Your Booking to the Evening You Want
Decide what your evenings are for before you book. A short Lekki stay built around dinners, beach walks and the Landmark area is best served by an Ikate or Lekki Phase 1 hotel, where you can walk to some restaurants and take a short ride to others. A stay built around family or business in Ajah is better served by a hotel near the expressway, even though it is less scenic. November to February brings the driest evenings and the easiest drives; the rainy season months from June to September mean longer waits and wet roads after dark.
On the numbers we see, hotel views and checkouts cluster in the Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate corridor, so availability there is tighter on weekends. Book Ikate for a two-night stay centred on the beach and the bridge, and accept a 40-minute evening run to Ajah rather than relocating. If Ajah features on more than one evening, book there instead and visit Ikate in the morning, when the expressway flows and the beach is far pleasanter than at dusk.
Questions, answered
How long does Ikate to Ajah take in the evening?
Off-peak the drive along the Lekki-Epe Expressway takes roughly 25 to 35 minutes. Between 5pm and 8pm, expect it to double around Igbo Efon and the toll gate area. Leaving before 4:30pm or after 8:30pm keeps it closer to the shorter figure.
Should I book a hotel in Ikate or Ajah for a short Lekki stay?
Book Ikate if your evenings are about the beach, the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge and restaurants, and Ajah appears only once. Book near the expressway in Ajah if you have repeated evening commitments there. Relocating mid-trip rarely pays off on a stay of two or three nights.
Is the coastal route from Ikate safe after dark?
The beach road towards Okunda Beach and Elegushi is scenic and quiet, but stretches are unlit and side roads turn sandy. Use it in daylight for a beach stop. After dark, the expressway is the more predictable route, even with traffic around Igbo Efon.
