Is Lekki Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Yes, Lekki is one of the safer parts of Lagos for solo female visitors, provided you stick to Phase 1, Ikate, Chevron and Victoria Island.

The daytime reality

Solo female travellers report Lekki Phase 1 and Victoria Island as broadly comfortable during daylight. Estates like Pinnock Beach, Northern Foreshore and the streets around Admiralty Way have private security, active foot traffic, cafes and malls with staff who’ll help. Cat-calling happens occasionally but is milder than in many major cities, and physical harassment on the street is uncommon. Dress code is flexible — Lekki is more cosmopolitan than religious, so shorts, dresses and sleeveless tops are unremarkable in restaurants, malls and beach clubs.

Where to be more careful: markets like Lekki Market at Jakande get crowded and pickpocket-prone, and the fringes of Ajah and around motor parks are not places to wander with a phone out. Keep phones in a zipped bag, not a back pocket, and don’t wear obvious jewellery in traffic — snatching from car windows in slow traffic is the most common incident.

Evenings, ride-hailing and instincts

At night, use Bolt or Uber door to door. Every restaurant and beach club has security who’ll walk you to your car if you ask — this is completely normal, not an imposition. Share your ride's live location with someone, and take a screenshot of the driver's plate before you get in. Avoid unmarked cars at all costs.

The main scam to know: fake calls or WhatsApp messages claiming a driver is "outside" when they’re not — always verify through the app itself. Beach club nights (Landmark, Ilashe) are generally fine solo but drinks-tampering isn’t unheard of, so keep an eye on your glass. Trust your gut: if a driver's route feels wrong, ask them to pull over at a filling station, not the roadside.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Lekki Phase 1.

Is it okay to walk alone at night?

Inside a residential estate with security, yes for short distances. Along the main expressway or unlit streets, no — use Bolt even for 500 metres.

Should I cover up religiously?

No, Lekki is not conservative in that way. Standard resort or city attire is fine everywhere except a mosque visit.
