June and July in Lekki: Peak Rainy Season Survival

These two months deliver 60% of Lagos's annual rainfall, and traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway becomes genuinely dangerous.

The wettest window

June and July are the two months every Lekki resident quietly dreads. Rainfall averages 400-450mm in June and 250-300mm in July. Storms can last six hours instead of one. The Lekki-Epe Expressway floods repeatedly around Ajah, Sangotedo and the Ikota junction, sometimes closing lanes for days. Third Mainland Bridge traffic backs up when Lekki drainage fails. What's normally a 30-minute drive from Ikoyi to Chevron becomes a 3-hour ordeal after a bad storm.

This isn’t dramatic exaggeration — it's normal. Locals plan around it. If you must visit in these months, stay where you’ll spend most time. Booking a Victoria Island hotel and expecting easy Ibeju-Lekki day trips is a mistake. Pick one area and settle in. Chevron, Ikate and Phase 1 have the best drainage relative to elsewhere on the peninsula.

Rates, closures and school holidays

Hotel rates hit rock bottom in June: ₦60,000-75,000 for rooms that were ₦120,000 in December. July sees a small bump because Nigerian schools break mid-July and domestic tourism picks up — families head to Omu Resort, Hi-Impact Planet and La Campagne Tropicana. Beach clubs remain open but see 40% weekday drops in traffic. Ilashe boats cancel maybe a quarter of scheduled trips.

Some smaller boutique places in Phase 1 close for renovations in June, timing repairs to the low season. Confirm your booking is with a hotel that's actually operating. Restaurants stay open but delivery services slow dramatically during storms. Stock snacks and water in your room. Expect one full-day blackout across your stay if it's longer than five nights.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Ikate.

Is it worth visiting Lekki in June or July?

Only if you’re heavily discount-driven or have specific business here. For a leisure trip, September or January-February delivers far better weather at not much more money.

How bad does traffic get during July rains?

Post-storm gridlock on Lekki-Epe Expressway can add 2-3 hours to any journey east of Chevron. Locals simply don’t travel during heavy rain.
