Lekki or Oniru: Picking Where to Stay by the Water

The Geography That Decides Your Stay

Lekki and Oniru sit on the same Atlantic-facing coastline east of Lagos Island, but they feel like different trips. Oniru, on Victoria Island, begins around the Landmark Events Centre and runs west toward Bar Beach; Lekki proper starts past the Ikoyi Link Bridge and stretches along the Lekki-Epe Expressway through Lekki Phase 1, Admiralty Way and beyond. From Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Oniru is roughly 45 to 70 minutes depending on Third Mainland Bridge traffic; Lekki Phase 1 adds 15 to 25 minutes more on a bad evening. If your trip is two nights and mostly meetings in Victoria Island, Oniru saves you the bridge twice a day.

The trade is space and quiet. Lekki Phase 1's Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo Road have larger rooms for the same band as Oniru's compact business hotels, and the northern end near Lekki Phase 1 Gate is noticeably calmer at night. Oniru wins on walkability: you can reach Landmark Village, the beach behind it, and a cluster of restaurants without a car. In Lekki, almost every movement is a taxi, and Bolt fares across the toll gate add up over a week. Book Oniru for a short business stay, Lekki Phase 1 for a longer one.

Beach Access and What Each Shore Actually Gives You

Oniru's beach is the accessible one. Landmark Beach, Oniru Beach and the stretch toward Bar Beach are reachable on foot or in five minutes by car, with day beds, food stalls and lifeguarded swimming areas in the dry season, roughly November to March. The surf is strong and the undertow real from June to September; most visitors then use pools rather than the sea. Lekki's beaches are further out — Elegushi and Okun-Ajah are 20 to 40 minutes past Lekki Phase 1 depending on where you stay, and the road to them narrows badly on weekend afternoons.

If you want the beach as the centre of the trip rather than an afternoon, stay closer to Oniru or book a Lekki hotel near the Ikate-Elegushi axis and accept that the expressway will be part of your day. Families with young children generally do better on the Oniru side: shorter transfers, more food options within walking distance, and easier evenings. Couples and longer-stay visitors who want a pool, quiet and space tend to prefer Lekki Phase 1. Check tide times before planning a beach morning; the difference between high and low water here is substantial.

Where to Book and Where to Skip

In Oniru, the strongest options cluster between the Landmark area and Water Corporation Drive — mid-range business hotels in the ₦70,000 to ₦120,000 band and a handful of serviced apartments above that. Lekki Phase 1's Admiralty Way and Ozumba Mbadiwe-adjacent streets offer a similar band with more square metres; around Lekki Phase 1 Roundabout you will find ₦50,000 to ₦90,000 rooms that in Oniru would cost more. Rates move sharply around December, when Lagos fills with returning visitors, and drop in the rainy months of June to September. Always confirm whether the quoted rate includes the 7.5 percent VAT and the 5 percent consumption tax.

Skip hotels marketed as 'Lekki' that sit past the Lekki Toll Gate or in Ajah unless you have business there — the drive back to Victoria Island in the morning can exceed an hour. Also skip any listing promising a private beach without a named access road; several properties describe a walk that is really a drive. If you are choosing one, book Oniru for a three-night work trip and Lekki Phase 1 for a week or more. Neither is a good base for exploring Lagos Island's markets, which are better reached from Ikoyi.

Practical Timing and Getting Around

Traffic sets the schedule. Cross the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge before 7am or after 10am to avoid the worst of it; the bridge toll is charged electronically and requires a tag, which most hotel desks can advise on. Oniru to Lekki Phase 1 is about 20 minutes outside peak hours and 50 or more inside them. Rides are easiest through the major apps, and prices rise during rain. Carry small cash notes for tolls and parking, and keep your hotel's address saved offline — drivers often know the estate gate better than the street name.

The best months for a water-focused stay are November through February: dry, breezy and with the sea calmest for swimming. March and April are hot and humid but still workable. June to September brings heavy rain, rough surf and occasional flooding on low-lying roads near Ikate, so build slack into airport transfers. Harmattan in December and January hazes the horizon but cools the evenings. If you want the beach and the city in one trip, two nights in Oniru followed by three in Lekki Phase 1 gives you both without a single long drive.

Good to know

Questions, answered

How far is Lekki from Oniru?

Lekki Phase 1 is roughly 12 to 15 kilometres from Oniru, about 20 minutes outside peak traffic and 50 minutes or more during the morning and evening rush. Crossing the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge is the fastest route and requires an electronic toll tag.

Which area is better for a first visit to Lagos?

Oniru suits a first visit better: shorter airport transfers, walkable restaurants and beach access, and easy reach of Victoria Island offices. Choose Lekki Phase 1 if you have a week or more and want more space and quieter nights.

What is the best time of year to stay near the beach?

November to February offers dry weather, cooler evenings and the calmest sea for swimming. June to September brings heavy rain and strong surf, when hotel pools are more useful than the ocean and road flooding can delay transfers.
