Rain hits roughly one day in three, and hotel rates sit at their lowest of the year, around ₦70,000 for solid mid-range rooms.

What the rain actually does

May is the month rainy season stops being a novelty. Storms arrive most afternoons or nights, dropping 20-40mm each time. Streets around Ikate, Chevron and Ajah flood in low spots within twenty minutes. Uber and Bolt surge pricing spikes 2-3x during downpours because drivers refuse to enter flooded streets. Total monthly rainfall runs 200-250mm compared to March's 60mm. Temperatures ease to 28-31°C, which sounds pleasant but the humidity stays at 85%.

Outdoor plans need built-in flexibility. Beach days work in the morning, rarely after 2pm. Lekki Conservation Centre closes early on heavy rain days because the boardwalk gets slippery. Nike Art Gallery, restaurants, cinemas at Circle Mall and Ikeja City Mall all become the default rainy afternoon.

Cheapest month of the year

May is the deepest trough in Lagos hotel pricing. Phase 1 rooms that command ₦120,000 in December drop to ₦65,000-80,000. Serviced apartments in Ikate go for ₦95,000-115,000. Airbnbs are negotiable — hosts will accept 20% below listed rates for stays over four nights. Restaurants run promotional menus. It's the smartest month to visit if you don’t mind rearranging your day around weather.

Everything remains open. Beach clubs run reduced weekday hours but full weekend service. Ilashe and Tarkwa Bay boats still run, weather permitting — check the morning of. Day trips to Epe or Badagry are fine, though roads can flood past Sangotedo. Bring waterproof shoes and a real rain jacket, not the tourist poncho you brought for Europe.
