What's overrated in Lekki (and what to do instead)
Empty tourist attraction on a weekday in Lekki
Six Lekki experiences that eat your time and money without paying you back, plus 6 alternatives that actually deliver.
The overrated list
Lekki Market on Admiralty Way — tourist-priced curios and hard sell. Go to Balogun Market on Lagos Island for the same crafts at a third the price. Alpha Beach — dangerous currents, no facilities. Do Eleko instead. Ikoyi Golf Club as a walk-in — you won’t get past the guard. Any 'Nigerian cultural show' hotel dinner. Landmark on a weekday afternoon (empty and awkward). The Lekki Toll Gate Memorial has been closed and reopened repeatedly — check before you go.
What to do instead
Nike Art Gallery over the market — free entry and better craft. Elegushi Beach at sunset over Alpha. Terra Kulture's actual theatre programme over hotel cultural nights. Ikeja City Mall's food court on a Saturday for a real cross-section of Lagos. Freedom Park in Lagos Island for live music on Friday nights ($5 entry). Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk over anything indoor-tourist-y.
Before you book
What people ask before booking Eleko.
Only if you go at the wrong time. Saturday 3pm onwards is genuinely great; Tuesday morning is a car park.
Occasional operators run them from Tarkwa Bay. Sightings are rare — don’t book expecting a National Geographic day.
