Where to Stay in Lekki for a Family Beach Weekend

Lekki rewards families who pick a base before they pick a beach, because the peninsula's traffic and tolls make backtracking costly.

Where to Stay in Lekki for a Family Beach Weekend

Choosing your base: Lekki Phase 1, Ikate or the Lekki-Epe corridor

Lekki Phase 1 is the practical first option for a family weekend. It sits closest to the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, which puts Victoria Island and Ikoyi within a short drive, and it has the deepest supply of serviced apartments and mid-range hotels on the peninsula. Expect a wide band of rates rather than one figure: apartments with a kitchenette generally cost less per night than full-service hotels of the same standard, and the kitchen is the real saving when you are feeding children breakfast and lunch.

Ikate, just east of Phase 1 along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, is quieter in the evenings and still close to the Admiralty Way restaurant strip. The trade-off is that you are slightly further from the bridge, so a Saturday morning run to a beach adds time. For most families I would book Phase 1 for a two-night stay and Ikate only if you are staying three nights or more and want a calmer compound.

Beaches families actually use, and what each costs you in time

The beaches that draw Lekki families sit east along the Lekki-Epe corridor: Landmark Beach near Oniru, Oniru Beach itself, and further out the stretch around Awoyaya and Ibeju-Lekki where access is simpler and the sand is quieter. Landmark is the most convenient from Phase 1, generally under half an hour outside peak traffic, and has food and changing facilities on site. Oniru is a short hop from there. Beaches further east can take an hour or more from Phase 1 once the expressway builds up, especially on Sunday evenings.

Set out early. Leaving Phase 1 by eight in the morning on a Saturday gets you onto the sand before the sun is harsh and before the expressway clogs. Bring cash in small notes for beach access and parking, since card acceptance is inconsistent at informal gates. The best months are November through February, when the harmattan haze softens the heat; the rainy season from June to September brings short, heavy afternoon downpours and rougher surf, so plan beach time for mornings.

What to book, and what to skip

For a family of four, I would book a serviced apartment in Lekki Phase 1 with two bedrooms, air conditioning in every room, a generator-backed power supply and a kitchenette, then treat the hotel pool as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip. Confirm three things in writing before you pay: that the backup power covers air conditioning and not just lights, that the compound has gated security, and that the apartment is a genuine short-let rather than a residential block that tolerates guests. Ask for a video walkthrough if you are booking from outside Lagos.

What I would skip: rooms on the expressway side of Ikate, where night traffic noise carries; any property that cannot confirm its power arrangement; and beachfront accommodation marketed as walkable when it actually requires a car. Also skip the temptation to stay on Victoria Island and commute — the bridge tolls and the evening queue at the Lekki toll gate make it a false economy for a beach-focused weekend. Two nights in Phase 1 beats three nights spread across two addresses.

Getting around, and when to go

A car with a driver is the sane choice for a beach weekend. Ride-hailing works in Lekki, but surge pricing on Saturday mornings and the difficulty of getting a return trip from the more distant beaches make a hired car for the day the more predictable option. Fuel and driver day rates vary, so agree the total before you set out, including waiting time at the beach. The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll is charged per crossing, so build it into your budget if your plans include Victoria Island.

Arrive on a Friday afternoon if you can. Friday evening traffic out of Lagos Island toward Lekki is heavy, and a late arrival eats into the one full day you have. If you are flying into Murtala Muhammed International Airport, allow well over an hour to reach Lekki Phase 1 outside peak hours and considerably more during the evening rush. Book accommodation with free cancellation where possible, and confirm the weekend dates early — Lekki's better family apartments fill quickly around public holidays.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Which part of Lekki is best for a family beach weekend?

Lekki Phase 1 suits most families: it is closest to the Link Bridge, has the widest choice of serviced apartments with kitchenettes, and keeps the drive to Landmark and Oniru beaches manageable. Ikate is a quieter alternative for longer stays.

How long does it take to reach the beach from Lekki?

From Lekki Phase 1, Landmark and Oniru beaches are generally under half an hour outside peak traffic. Beaches further east around Awoyaya and Ibeju-Lekki can take an hour or more, particularly on Sunday evenings when the expressway is busy.

When is the best time to visit Lekki for a beach trip?

November to February is the most comfortable window, with less humidity and gentler heat. June to September brings heavy afternoon rain and rougher water, so plan beach visits for the morning and keep indoor options ready.
