Day trip to Ikoyi from Lekki

Getting across

The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll is about $0.50 each way. Bolt from Phase 1 to Ikoyi runs $4 to $7 depending on where in Ikoyi. Off-peak the crossing is five minutes; at rush hour it's 40. Aim to leave Lekki by 10am and return before 4pm or after 8pm.

If the bridge itself backs up, the older Falomo Bridge route via Awolowo Road is a longer but sometimes faster alternative when there's an accident on the link road, adding maybe 15 minutes. Keep small notes for the toll gate rather than relying on card readers, which go down often enough to matter. Drivers doing the trip themselves should budget for parking, most galleries and restaurants in Ikoyi have their own small lots, but street parking on Kingsway or Alexander Avenue can mean a $1 to $2 tip to an attendant.

What to do

Start at Rele Gallery on Military Street, contemporary Nigerian art, free entry. Walk over to Freedom Park on Broad Street for lunch and live music at weekends, entry about $2. Ikoyi Club has one of the older 18-hole golf courses in West Africa if you have a guest connection. Dodan Barracks area is worth a slow drive-by for the old military architecture.

Round out the loop with Parkview Estate, a gated residential enclave with a flat, tree-lined jogging track that locals use in the early morning and again after 5pm, free to walk through and a good way to see Ikoyi's quieter colonial-era housing stock. Bogobiri House on Maitama Sule Street runs live music and poetry nights and doubles as a small gallery space, worth checking their schedule before you go since it's hit or miss on weekday afternoons. Skip Ikoyi Prison, the old colonial jail is now derelict and not set up for casual visitors, a photo from the perimeter road is as close as you'll reasonably get.

Eating and drinking

Ikoyi is where the Lagos food scene concentrates. Lunch at Sao Cafe on Kingsway ($20 a head), dinner at Yellow Chilli on Oyinkan Abayomi ($25), cocktails at The George rooftop ($10 each). For a splurge, Nok by Alara does a pan-African tasting menu around $70. Book everywhere on weekends.

RSVP is the other big-ticket option, a continental menu with a scene to match, figure $30 to $40 a head before drinks, and it's the one place on this list where you'll want to book at least three days out rather than the usual one. If you're trying to keep the whole day under $50 a person, skip the tasting menu and stack Sao Cafe for lunch against Yellow Chilli for dinner instead, that combination covers the range of Nigerian and continental cooking Ikoyi is known for without the splurge pricing. Coffee and pastries are easy to find on Kingsway if you just want a $3 to $5 stop between galleries.

Getting around once you're there

Ikoyi is more walkable than most of Lagos but the distances still add up, Rele Gallery to Freedom Park is about 3 kilometres, roughly a 10-minute drive or a 35-minute walk in the heat. Most visitors either keep their Bolt running between stops, short hops inside Ikoyi run $2 to $4, or hire a driver for the day, which costs $30 to $40 and is worth it if you're doing five or six stops.

Boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) exist in Ikoyi but are less common than in Lekki proper and not recommended for a first visit, the road layout around Bourdillon and Alexander is confusing enough that a wrong turn costs more time than the fare saves. If you're only doing two or three stops close together, walking between them is genuinely pleasant before noon, after that the humidity makes a car worth the few dollars.

Green space and river walks

Osborne Foreshore Estate, off Osborne Road, has a public riverside walk along the Lagos Lagoon that's free to use and popular at sunset, figure 20 to 30 minutes to cover the length of it. It's one of the few spots in Ikoyi where you get water views without paying for a rooftop drink, and it pairs well with an evening meal nearby rather than a midday visit when there's no shade.

Ikoyi Club's golf course covers the other big patch of green in the area, but it's members and guests only, so don't plan around it unless you've confirmed a connection in advance. Between Osborne and Parkview, you can cover most of Ikoyi's outdoor space in under an hour, which makes it easy to slot in either right after breakfast or right before dinner without eating into gallery or restaurant time.

When to go, and when to skip it

November through February is the easiest window, dry, less humid, and the harmattan haze that settles over Lagos in December and January doesn't affect road conditions the way rain does. April through October is the rainy season, and a heavy afternoon downpour can turn the link bridge approach into a standstill for over an hour, so if you're travelling in that window, check the sky before you commit to an afternoon crossing.

Weekdays are quieter at the galleries but restaurants like RSVP and Nok by Alara lean into weekend crowds with live music or extended hours, so the trip changes character depending on which you pick. If your main goal is the art and the walk, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday; if it's the food and drinks scene, Friday or Saturday evening is when Ikoyi actually comes alive.
