Safety and street smarts in Lekki
Lekki is one of the safer parts of Lagos but Lagos is still Lagos. Here's what to actually worry about and what to ignore.

The real risks
Traffic accidents are the biggest actual danger, especially at night and in the rain. Wear seatbelts even in Bolts. Petty theft happens at markets and packed clubs, keep your phone deep in a pocket. ATM skimming exists; use machines inside bank branches when possible. Scams targeting tourists are less common in Lekki than in tourist-heavy destinations because Lekki isn’t very tourist-heavy.
Police, army and checkpoints
You may pass a checkpoint on the Lekki-Epe Expressway or heading toward Ibeju-Lekki. Stay calm, keep your window down, greet politely, hand over a photocopy of your passport if asked (never the original if you can help it). If asked for money and you have a Nigerian friend or driver, let them handle it. Don’t argue, don’t film.
Night rules
Bolt everywhere after dark, don’t walk between neighbourhoods. Landmark, Hard Rock, RSVP and Quilox all have proper security and are fine to leave from at 2am; just Bolt door to door. Avoid quiet streets in Ikate after 11pm. Never carry more cash than you need. Tell your hotel where you’re going if you’re doing a night out.
Health basics
Malaria is present, use repellent especially at the Conservation Centre and after rain. Drink bottled water only. Any food that's clearly hot and freshly cooked at busy places is fine, including street food. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry to Nigeria.
