Where to stay in Lekki: choosing between Phase 1, Ikate, Chevron and Ajah
Lekki Phase 1 is where most first-time visitors should stay: it sits right after Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, puts you 10 minutes from Victoria Island and gives you the highest concentration of restaurants along Admiralty Way. Rates here are the steepest on the peninsula, typically ₦90,000–₦250,000 a night. Ikate and Lekki Phase 2, one roundabout further out along Lekki-Epe Expressway, cut 20–30% off the price for essentially the same access. Oniru, technically between VI and Lekki, is the pick if you want the beach clubs at Landmark within walking distance.
Chevron, Agungi, Osapa London and Jakande sit between the second and third roundabouts and suit longer stays or business travellers visiting the Chevron and Shell offices. Ajah, Sangotedo and Awoyaya are 25–40 km from VI and price accordingly — often ₦40,000–₦80,000 for the same standard of room — but the commute back inbound after 7am is brutal. Ibeju-Lekki, Eleko and Lakowe are worth it only if your trip is built around Dangote Refinery, La Campagne Tropicana or the Lakowe Lakes golf course; from Eleko back to Phase 1 is a 90-minute drive on a good day.
Best time to visit Lekki: month-by-month weather and hotel prices
The dry season from late November through March is when Lekki is busiest and most expensive. December is the peak — Detty December, the Afro Nation and Flytime festivals, and the diaspora return push Phase 1 and Oniru rates up 40–70%, and the better hotels along Admiralty Way sell out three to six weeks ahead. January calms down after the second week; February and early March offer the best weather-to-price ratio, with clear Harmattan haze lifting and rates back to normal.
April to mid-July is the long rainy season, and Lekki floods — Ikate, Chevron Drive and the Lekki-Epe Expressway service lanes routinely go under 30–60 cm of water after heavy storms. Hotels drop rates 15–25% in June and July as a result. August brings the short dry break, September and October are wet again but quieter, and November is the sweet spot before December pricing kicks in around the 15th.
Getting around Lekki: traffic, the BRT, and whether you need a car
You do not need to rent a car in Lekki, and driving yourself is a bad idea if you do not know the expressway. Bolt and Uber both work reliably across Phase 1, Ikate, Chevron, Osapa, Jakande and Ajah, with typical fares of ₦2,500–₦6,000 within the peninsula and ₦4,000–₦9,000 to Victoria Island or Ikoyi. LagRide (the green Lagos state e-hail) tends to be cheaper for longer runs to Ikeja or the airport. There is no rail on the peninsula — the Blue Line stops at Marina, on the island side.
The BRT runs down the Lekki-Epe Expressway from Ajah through Chevron and Ikate to CMS at ₦500–₦1,000, and is the only thing that moves during Lekki toll gate gridlock, but it is standing-room only at rush hour. Distances look short and aren't: Phase 1 to Ajah is 18 km but 45–90 minutes in traffic; Phase 1 to Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja is 35 km and can take 2.5 hours between 4pm and 8pm. Plan around the tides of traffic, not the map.
