Getting around Lekki: traffic, the BRT, and whether you need a car

You do not need to rent a car in Lekki, and driving yourself is a bad idea if you do not know the expressway. Bolt and Uber both work reliably across Phase 1, Ikate, Chevron, Osapa, Jakande and Ajah, with typical fares of ₦2,500–₦6,000 within the peninsula and ₦4,000–₦9,000 to Victoria Island or Ikoyi. LagRide (the green Lagos state e-hail) tends to be cheaper for longer runs to Ikeja or the airport. There is no rail on the peninsula — the Blue Line stops at Marina, on the island side.

The BRT runs down the Lekki-Epe Expressway from Ajah through Chevron and Ikate to CMS at ₦500–₦1,000, and is the only thing that moves during Lekki toll gate gridlock, but it is standing-room only at rush hour. Distances look short and aren't: Phase 1 to Ajah is 18 km but 45–90 minutes in traffic; Phase 1 to Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja is 35 km and can take 2.5 hours between 4pm and 8pm. Plan around the tides of traffic, not the map.

How many nights in Lekki and a sensible first-timer itinerary

Four nights is the right length for a first visit built around Lekki itself, five if you want a beach day at Eleko or Ilashe. Base yourself in Phase 1 or Oniru. Day one, keep it local: Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk in the morning, Lekki Arts and Crafts Market in the afternoon, dinner on Admiralty Way. Day two, cross to Ikoyi and Victoria Island for Nike Art Gallery, Freedom Park and Jazzhole.

Day three works for Eleko Beach or a boat to Ilashe or Tarkwa Bay — leave Phase 1 by 8am to beat the expressway. Day four is a shopping and food day around Landmark, Circle Mall and Ikate. If you have a week, add a day trip to Badagry for the slave route museums (allow a full day, it is 60 km west of VI) or Epe fish market on a Saturday. Skip trying to do Ibadan or Abeokuta on a short trip — the drive out of Lagos eats a whole day.

What Lekki hotels actually cost in 2024

Budget rooms in Lekki start around ₦25,000–₦45,000 a night in Ajah, Sangotedo, Ikota and outer Chevron. At this level expect an inverter for outage cover, a small generator, unreliable hot water and no restaurant to speak of. Mid-range, ₦60,000–₦130,000, is the sweet spot in Ikate, Agungi and Phase 2 — 24-hour power, a working pool or gym, breakfast included, and a reception that can actually order you a Bolt. Serviced apartments in Osapa London and Ikate at ₦90,000–₦180,000 are often better value than hotels for stays over four nights.

Top-end in Phase 1 and Oniru runs ₦200,000–₦600,000, with the Radisson Blu Anchorage, Lekki Coliseum and a handful of Oniru boutiques at the upper end. Rates spike in December (add 40–70%), during major concerts at Eko Hotel or Livespot Entertarium, and around the Lagos Photo Festival in November. Most Lekki hotels quote in naira but a few Phase 1 properties still price in dollars — always confirm which, and whether the 7.5% VAT and 5% consumption tax are included.

What should I book early for a Lekki trip?
Book December accommodation by early October — Phase 1, Oniru and Ikate hotels routinely sell out for the 20 December to 3 January window, and Afro Nation and Flytime concert weeks fill up fast. Restaurant reservations for Nok by Alara, Z Kitchen and RSVP need at least a week ahead on Fridays and Saturdays. Boat trips to Ilashe or Tarkwa Bay through Tarkwa Bay Boats or Ilashe Beach Resort should be booked two to three days out. Everything else — Ubers, day-of dinners in Ikate, the Lekki Arts and Crafts Market — is fine walk-up.
What is the typical nightly rate for a hotel in Lekki?
The typical mid-range rate in Lekki is ₦60,000–₦130,000 a night in 2024, for a room with 24-hour power, breakfast and a functional pool or gym in Ikate, Agungi or Phase 2. Budget rooms in Ajah and Sangotedo start around ₦25,000–₦45,000 with basic inverter power. Top-end Phase 1 and Oniru properties run ₦200,000–₦600,000. Add 7.5% VAT and 5% consumption tax if not included in the quoted rate, and expect a 40–70% December surcharge.
Is Lekki walkable?
No, Lekki is not walkable in the way European or North American cities are — distances are long, pavements are patchy and the heat and humidity make anything over 15 minutes uncomfortable most of the year. The exceptions are pockets: within Lekki Phase 1 you can walk Admiralty Way between restaurants, Oniru around Landmark Beach and Twin Waters works on foot, and Circle Mall in Jakande is fine once you are there. For anything else, use Bolt. Do not try to walk along the Lekki-Epe Expressway service lanes.
Is Lekki safe at night?
Lekki is one of the safer parts of Lagos at night, particularly Phase 1, Oniru, Ikate and the gated estates in Chevron and Osapa London, which have private security and 24-hour LEPMU patrols. Take normal city precautions: use Bolt or Uber rather than street-hailing, avoid the Lekki-Epe Expressway service lanes on foot after dark, and keep your phone out of sight in traffic. The stretch of expressway between Ajah and Sangotedo is quieter and worth being more careful in after 10pm. Bars and restaurants on Admiralty Way are busy until 2–3am on weekends and comfortable to move between.
What is the best area to stay in Lekki for first-time visitors?
Lekki Phase 1 is the best area for a first visit, followed by Oniru if you want the beach and Landmark within walking distance. Phase 1 sits right after the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, so you are 10 minutes from Ikoyi and 15 from Victoria Island outside rush hour. Admiralty Way has the densest cluster of restaurants, bars and 24-hour pharmacies on the peninsula. Expect to pay ₦90,000–₦250,000 a night for a decent mid-range room here.
