Getting around Lekki: car, bus, and the expressway reality
A car — your own driver, a hired one, or Uber/Bolt/inDrive — is genuinely necessary in Lekki. There is no rail on the peninsula; the Blue Line ends at Marina and the Red Line runs Agbado to Oyingbo, so neither helps you east of Ikoyi. BRT buses run the Lekki-Epe Expressway from CMS through Ajah to Abraham Adesanya, useful if you are patient and travelling light, but they do not enter estates like Chevron, Agungi or Nicon Town.
Distances look short and drive long. Phase 1 to Ajah is about 18 km but 40-90 minutes depending on the Lekki toll gate and school-run traffic. VI to Chevron is 12 km, typically 30-50 minutes. Ibeju-Lekki and Eleko are 45-70 km from Phase 1 and easily two hours each way. Danfo minibuses and okadas exist but okadas are banned on the expressway and most of Lekki, so do not plan around them. Budget ₦8,000-₦15,000 a day for Bolt if you are hopping between two or three areas.
How many nights in Lekki and a sensible first-timer plan
Four to five nights is the right length for a first visit. Any less and the traffic eats your itinerary; any more and you will want to add Epe, Badagry or a domestic flight to Calabar or Abuja. Base yourself in Lekki Phase 1 or Oniru for the whole stay rather than moving — changing hotels mid-trip in Lagos costs you half a day each time.
A workable shape: day one, Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walk and dinner on Admiralty Way; day two, Nike Art Gallery in Ikate and Landmark Beach in Oniru; day three, a full day at Ilashe or La Campagne Tropicana beach in Ibeju-Lekki; day four, Lekki Arts and Crafts Market, Terra Kulture on VI and Freedom Park on Lagos Island; day five, brunch in Ikoyi and departure. Add a sixth night if you want Lakowe Lakes golf or a slow day at Eleko Beach.
What Lekki hotels actually cost
Budget rooms — small guesthouses and unbranded hotels in Ikate, Agungi, Ikota and Ajah — run roughly ₦35,000-₦70,000 a night in 2024 pricing, usually with AC, inverter backup and breakfast but not always hot water or reliable Wi-Fi. Mid-range in Lekki Phase 1, Chevron and Osapa London sits at ₦80,000-₦180,000 and gets you a pool, a working generator through NEPA outages, and a restaurant. Serviced apartments in Ikate and Lekki Phase 2 at 3-7 night stays often beat hotels on value.
Upper-end hotels on the peninsula and in Oniru — think the branded chains near the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge — are ₦220,000-₦500,000, and Victoria Island landmarks like Eko, Radisson Blu Anchorage and the Federal Palace push ₦350,000-₦800,000. Beach resorts in Ibeju-Lekki and Lakowe run ₦180,000-₦450,000 with meals. Rates spike hardest between 20 December and 3 January and around Afro Nation dates; a room that is ₦120,000 in September can be ₦220,000 on 28 December.
