The Lekki booking trap nobody warns you about
The trap is the toll gates. The Lekki-Epe Expressway has two toll plazas — the Admiralty Circle toll just after the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge and the second near Chevron — and traffic backs up at both, especially inbound between 7-10am and outbound 5-9pm. A hotel advertised as '15 minutes from Victoria Island' may mean 15 minutes at 6am Sunday and 75 minutes on a Wednesday evening. Check which side of the Chevron toll your hotel sits on before booking; it matters more than the star rating.
The second thing worth knowing: Ibeju-Lekki is not Lekki. Listings sometimes label a resort '35 minutes from VI' when it is actually near Eleko or the Dangote Refinery, 60-90 minutes out in real traffic. And do not skip Oniru assuming it is just Victoria Island — Oniru sits between VI and Lekki Phase 1, has Landmark Beach and the New Market, and often prices 15-25% under equivalent VI rooms while being closer to most of what visitors actually want to see.
Where to stay in Lekki: picking the right area
Lekki Phase 1 is the default answer for most first-time visitors: it sits right after the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll, puts you 10-15 minutes from Victoria Island, and has the highest concentration of mid-range and upscale hotels, plus Lekki Conservation Centre and the Ikoyi-Lekki bridge views. Ikate and Lekki Phase 2 are slightly cheaper, closer to Circle Mall and the Jakande roundabout, and suit business travellers heading to offices along Admiralty Way. Oniru and Victoria Island proper cost more but give you Landmark Beach, Eko Hotel and shorter runs to Ikoyi.
Further east, Chevron, Agungi, Osapa London and Ikota are residential and quieter, with serviced apartments often 20-30% below Phase 1 rates. Ajah, Sangotedo, Awoyaya and Abraham Adesanya are cheapest of all but add 45-90 minutes of expressway traffic to anywhere west of the Chevron roundabout. Ibeju-Lekki, Eleko and Lakowe are for beach and resort stays near the Dangote Refinery corridor and La Campagne Tropicana; Epe and Badagry are day-trip territory, not bases. Ikeja is the airport, not Lekki, and staying there to visit Lekki is a mistake most first-timers only make once.
Best time to visit Lekki, month by month
November to February is the dry season and the peak: harmattan haze in December and January, average highs around 32°C, and hotel rates in Phase 1 climbing 20-40% around Detty December, the Lagos festival run that pulls in diaspora crowds for Afro Nation, Flytime Fest and countless beach parties at Landmark and Elegushi. Book Phase 1 and Oniru rooms by early October or you will pay walk-in rates. March and April are hot and humid, with the first rains arriving late April; prices dip about 15% from the December peak.
May through mid-July is the main rainy season — expect flooding on Admiralty Way, Freedom Way and the Lekki-Epe Expressway after heavy downpours, and factor an extra 30-60 minutes into any trip. This is the cheapest window, with mid-range hotels in Ikate and Agungi often at 25-35% off peak. August brings the short dry spell locals call the August break, September and October are wet again but manageable, and rates start climbing from mid-November as Christmas returnee bookings lock in.
